ResNET

To keep all users in our resident accommodation safe online and provide a fast and reliable service, there are some things we need to put in place.

ResNet provides:

• The ability to network devices that for technical reasons otherwise cannot connect to the eduroam WiFi network.
• A single ethernet port in your bedroom through which you may connect a devices to the internet using an RJ45 ethernet cable. Note: Riego Street and Gilmore Place halls are WiFi only.
• Similar download / upload speeds available via eduroam or on-campus connectivity.

• The ability to connect a whole range of devices including PCs, laptops, game consoles, smart speakers etc.

• A simple way to register your devices for use on the ResNET network.

• EdPrint printing in Halls of Residence via the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service.

To ensure safety and a quality experience for all:

• Please do not connect a computer running an old version of Windows (95, 98, 2000, ME, XP or Vista)

• Please do not connect more than one registered network device at a time through any given outlet.

• We have had to remove a direct connection to the main campus network. A VPN should be used to connect to restricted campus or school resources.

• Please do not network personal printers.

PLEASE NOTE: Extending the network by using hubs, switches or wireless access devices is strictly prohibited.

The University of Edinburgh provides internet access (“ResNET”) for residents in the out halls of residence. ResNET is provided to support students’ educational goals and academic needs, and to build an active, virtual community for our residents. ResNET is also provided for your recreational and personal purposes.

The ResNET network is a shared resource across UoE managed accommodation. Consequently there are some restrictions that need to be placed on the use of this network, to ensure it works well for all students.

Students need to adhere to the University Computing Regulations when using ResNET.

• Personal wireless access points must not be connected to the network in the residence halls. Use of personal access points causes interference with the ResNET wireless network and will degrade signal/performance for others. Use of personal Hotspots for connecting to personal devices i.e. Wi-Fi enabled printers is permitted.
• The use of small switches or network hubs to extend the wired network in university halls of residence is not allowed. If you need additional network ports in your room then please contact EdHelp to arrange the loan of a mini switch.

PLEASE NOTE – due to global supply issues the mini switches are limited and will be prioritised as required.

• Peer-to-Peer file sharing, e.g. illegal downloading of films, music, games etc., is not allowed. Downloading illegal content may result in your access to ResNET service being removed.
• Do not make use of the ResNET service to gain, or attempt to gain, illegal or unauthorised access to data.
• Users generating excessive levels of network traffic and running services (such as DHCP, DNS, STUN), so as to negatively impact the ability of others to access the network, may have their service discontinued without warning to protect the integrity of the network.
• The University of Edinburgh reserves the right to implement ad hoc traffic shaping policies to ensure an equitable share of network bandwidth for all users.
• Do not pass on the ResNET service to others, whether for commercial gain or free of charge, unless they are members within your own household.
• You should keep your computer's operating system, anti-virus & anti-spyware software up-to-date.
• Do not connect machines running server operating systems or services (including DHCP, DNS, web servers) to the ResNet service.
• Do not use the ResNET Service for any activities that bring the University into disrepute.
