All staff of the University are entitled to use the SMS text messaging service. Students may also do so but require the authorisation of the lecturer or supervisor. Messages sent using this service cost 1.06 credits, or 4.1 pence each. This charge applies even if the message cannot be delivered, as long as the telephone number is in a valid format. Each area using the service is allocated an initial 500 credits free of charge. Once an area has used their allocation, they must pay for an additional allocation of credits. The minimum allocation of credits is 500 or the equivalent of one year's usage, whichever is the higher.
