Common problems

Some University services are only accessible to users who are logged into a computer that on the University network. This is to prevent unauthorised access.

You can connect to the University network by using the VPN service.

VPN registration and setup

Most web browsers have a pop-up blocker, which prevents websites from opening unwanted pop-up windows. Usually this is a good thing, but occasionally links in MyEd may be incorrectly blocked by your browser's pop-up blocker.

If your browser is asking you to allow pop-ups from www.myed.ed.ac.uk, then go ahead and set this to "allow".

You can also explicitly enable pop-ups for MyEd, or all University websites, in your browser:

1. Find the "Pop-Ups" section in your browser settings or options menu. Specific browser help is available here.
2. Add one of the following to the list of exceptions or allowed sites: - www.myed.ed.ac.uk - allows MyEd to open pop-ups, *ed.ac.uk - allows all University of Edinburgh websites to open pop-ups (recommended)

Your browser back button will work to get back to most content in MyEd.   However, sometimes you may see an error message or a warning that the "page has expired".   This is normally because the portlet you are using is a self-contained application.

If this happens, click and hold on your browser back button.  This will show you a list of pages you have visited recently.  Select the first one on the list which contains the text "MyEd Student and Staff Portal" and this will take you back to MyEd.

If any portlet is not working, and it is either blank or displaying an error message, try the following:

• Check whether there is scheduled maintenance or a known problem which might affect this content by checking the IS Alert Log
• Logout from MyEd and close your browser, then log back in and try to view the content again
