What can I produce in the Studio?

Overview of what types of media that can be produced in the Studio.

Below are some examples of the most common types of media created at the studio spaces.

Piece To Camera (PTC)

The presenter talks directly to the camera, as if they are talking directly to the viewer. This style usually features only one person talking and is often used to convey information. This would normally be fully scripted and we would use the teleprompter to make it easy for the presenter. This style can be produced with the full support of the media team in the Main Studio, or in a simplified form using the semi-supported Audio Booth.

Talking Head

If you have a case study, industry expert or anyone who isn’t teaching on the course, then a talking head is a useful way to have them appear on camera in a less direct way.  They're talking to someone off camera who we don’t see or hear, and it wouldn’t normally be scripted, so it will have a natural, conversational feel. It’s quite common to edit several of these together as it’s an effective way to show different opinions on the same topic.

Interview/discussion

Taking the conversational style further, we can set up a talk show style interview. This would normally be 2 people and three cameras, but it is possible to have more if needed. The interview or conversation would be well prepared with questions or prompts but would not usually be scripted. This style of video used to require a lot of editing time, but from the control room next door, we can take all the camera feeds from the studio into a live production switcher and produce a first cut of the video in real time.

Learning Glass

The learning Glass is an innovative tool for presenting equations, diagrams, graphs or anything you might normally write on a board while teaching. The advantage of the learning glass is that by  filming through the glass to the presenter, they don’t need to turn away from the camera to write or draw. UV edge lighting makes the markers glow, giving a unique look to your presentation. The video is flipped in post-production, so you don’t need to write backwards.

On Location

sometimes it’s important to film outside the studio. If you need to present you video from a certain location, or feature events, people or objects that can’t be brought to the studio, our team can go out and film on location. It is of course more time consuming than using the studio and therefore less cost effective.

Voice Over (VO) or Podcast

The sound proof audio booth is the perfect place to record a voice over or podcast. It has an extremely high quality studio microphone connected to an iMac for easy recoding.

Screencast with VO

The Audio Booth is also ideal for recording screen captures with VO. There is the option to record dual stream videos using Kaltura Capture and Media Hopper Create. This enables you to record yourself and your screen in separate streams so the learner can decide which to focus on.

Remote interview/discussion

If your interview subject is too far away to come to the studio, we have software in the audio booth that can record separate streams from each side of a skype call. This enables greater flexibility in the edit and maximised the audio and video quality of the recording. Editing is required for these recordings, so you either need to do that yourself or employ the support of our media team.
