DLAM TEL Service Team, also in Information Service Group, manages Noteable service and supports the staff and students in the University. The purpose of Noteable is to allow users to access Jupyter notebooks at any time without the requirement for pre-installation on individual devices.Noteable can be used for assessment and feedback using the built in Nbgrader plug-in's functions.Since summer 2025, Grades are passed back to Learn course Gradebook once feedback released on Nbgrader. What Notebooks and Environment Versions are available in Noteable? The latest environments updated on 4th August 2025 are:JupyterLab 4.4.3Jupyter notebook 7.4.3RStudio Server 2024.09.0 375 “Cranberry Hibiscus”.See the list of Notebooks offered in Noteable with the respective primary libraries on EDINA website. Using Noteable for Teaching, Learning and Assessment Using Noteable for Teaching and Learning Along with other course tools such as Turnitin Feedback Studio, MediaHopper Create, Wooclap etc., Noteable can be accessed from a Learn course via an LTI1.3 integration link. A step by step instruction is available in the SharePoint site (log in required).Notebook-based teaching materials and data sets can be shared in the course's Shared-data folder in Noteable. Noteable also incorporates nbgitpuller, an extension that allows you to link to public Github repos. Students can access Noteable from their Learn course. They can create notebooks and execute code on Noteable. Using Noteable for Assessment and Feedback Instructors can create notebook-based assignments using the Nbgrader plugin on Noteable, and carry out marking and feedback processes for their students. Nbgrader is not available in RStudio, but instructors can use the R with Stan notebook in Noteable to run R code and to access Nbgrader.Grades are passed back to Learn Gradebook once Feedback Released in Nbgrader.Detailed instructions and known issues can be found in the Noteable SharePoint Site (log in required). You may also find helpful to visit EDINA's Instructor Guide to Assignments & Nbgrader, and the Nbgrader's documentation. Disk Quota Disk Quota on Noteable Each user is allocated with 10GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.Each Learn course which uses Noteable has a course level shared-data folder in Noteable and it has 10GB storage for shared access. Please refer to EDINA's Noteable data retention policy. Students should be reminded to backup their notebooks and data files before they finish study and leave the University. Their data will not be accessible once their user account is expired - see the University’s account expiry policy.Further details on how to share files with students are available on the Noteable SharePoint Site (log in required). How to free up disk space / empty Trash If you are running out of disk storage spaces, you can try:Review your Noteable notebooks: Since each user is allocated 10GB of storage, look through your notebooks to find which ones are taking up the most space.Look for large datasets: Within your notebooks, identify and delete any large datasets that are no longer needed.Use the course level shared-data folder for large datasets.Empty Trash:When you delete files in the Jupyter UI, it sends them to your Trash folder - much like Windows or MacOS do. To free up disk space, you should empty the trash regularly. The easiest way to empty Trash is to open a new terminal and use the command: rm -rf ~/.local/share/TrashFor further details and screenshots, please visit the Noteable SharePoint site (log in required).
