Information Services is currently working on an exciting project to provide a refurbishment to the MyEd service. The project has two strands, where the first aims to improve the user experience with MyEd, and the second focuses on making the service run better. To achieve this, IS is working on a preview version of the refurbished MyEd, which will not only give users a taste of what could be expected, but also provide data to IS regarding potential improvements in the design. The Motivation for MyEd The motivation behind the project is twofold: on top of designing MyEd to be a more intuitive portal, the refurbishment aims to also make it more supportive of the student experience. For new students, MyEd will remain the primary portal introducing them to other student services in the university. However, the current MyEd format can be thought of as being structured around the services, and not around student’s needs. As it stands, unless users knew exactly where to look for a service, MyEd remains to be very hard to navigate, which isn’t particularly friendly for the new user’s experience. Current Work So far, work has focused on research and engagement regarding what needs to be done in refurbishing MyEd. Part of this included spending time looking at portals from other universities, planning with stakeholders, and researching options on how the new infrastructure could be designed. In doing this research, IS will in turn design a preview version of the refurbished MyEd, to be released later in the year. The refurbished preview will act as both a research and engagement tool. The preview allows IS to experiment on potential layouts of a new MyEd while also allowing end users to submit feedback which design features work best. This feedback system allows for certain features in the preview to be carried over into the final design, while other features may have to be altered or removed beforehand. Future Outlook To ensure the success of the project, IS encourages the full support of the student body in interacting with the preview version. So, keep your eyes peeled for the coming changes to MyEd, and be ready for an improved user experience. Publication date 03 May, 2018
