The Communications Infrastructure Services section (CIS) is responsible for three important University-facing services. Network Service The University’s data network “EdLAN” and the associated WiFi network are crucial services which underpin virtually all of the IT services used by staff and students. It is continually changing and expanding as the University’s needs change. CIS is responsible for: Management, maintenance, support and development of EdLAN Designing, planning and commissioning new installations Fault diagnosis and repair, including out-of-hours service for critical faults Providing consultancy services on network protocols and equipment Network Service Telephone Service The telephone service comprises approximately 11,000 telephone extensions, in most of the University’s buildings, together with a number of telephone exchange units and connections to the public telephone network. CIS is responsible for: Management, maintenance, support and development of the telephone system. Designing, planning and commissioning new installations. Implementing telephone moves, adds and changes (MACs). Fault diagnosis and repair. Managing the University’s telephone directory and operating the telephone switchboard. Telephone Service Access Control Door Service There are over 1000 access control doors across the University, and the security system which manages them also monitors over 1000 alarms, including fire, intruder and critical equipment alarms. CIS is responsible for: Management, maintenance, support and development of the security system Designing, planning and commissioning new installations of access control doors and associated equipment Fault diagnosis and repair, including out-of-hours service for critical faults Supporting Door Managers to control access to University spaces Access Control Door Service Vscene (Janet Videoconferencing Service) Please note that as of 1 March 2017, CIS no longer run, or provide support for, the Jisc Vscene service.
