Introduction to Generative AI for Higher Education Professional Services Staff

This is an online self-paced course which will include an introduction to generative AI tools and tips on using these effectively to support your work. In particular, this course will focus on the University of Edinburgh’s generative AI tool (ELM), available for use by all staff.

Shaped by professional services, for professional services, this course will get you started using generative AI tools straight away, regardless of your technical background.

Including real-life case studies introduced by professional services staff from across the University of Edinburgh to demonstrate how they use generative AI as a tool to support activities and to take the effort out of routine tasks – using it to brainstorm ideas, assist with writing, summarising meetings, and automating routine tasks to name a few examples.

This course covers:

  • A quick introduction to generative AI focussing on the Edinburgh Language Model (ELM) and what you can use it for
  • Practical examples to build confidence using ELM
  • Real-Life case studies from colleagues at the University of Edinburgh
  • Tips to get the best results from ELM
  • Guidance on responsible usage of generative AI in day-to-day work
