Collaboration carried SAP BusinessObjects successful upgrade

SAP BusinessObjects and Client Tools upgraded to the latest stable version thanks to the great collaboration of Applications Teams.

SAP BusinessObjects is a software specialising in business intelligence. Previously, the University was using an older, out-of-date version (4.3 Service Pack 1, Patch 11). Thanks to the efforts of members across Information Services, the software has now been upgraded to the latest stable, vendor-recommended version (4.3 Service Pack 3, Patch 10) on all three of the BusinessObjects environments and SAP Client Tools (DEV, TEST, and LIVE).

A great deal of collaboration was involved in the success of this project, particularly with the collective dedication of different Teams working together, including:

  • Service Management
  • Development Technology
  • Technical Management
  • Production Management
  • Project Services

Previous project iterations had noted the impact this upgrade had to users, and therefore safeguarding the user experience was a key priority for this project team. The Business Lead to the project had used those lessons to create an Issue Tracking website, and an extensive communication plan to ensure a smooth experience for users during this project. Additionally, extensive functional and user testing was conducted at all stages of the project to ensure all issues and changes were tracked in real-time and mitigated with the project team appropriately. This ultimately minimised the impact to users and aided in a smooth upgrade.

When you have team members in different areas working collaboratively, communication and motivation is key. The success of this project rested on the outstanding ability of the team to work together by communicating frequently with candour, respect, and at many times, joy!
