About the residency

What is a Wikimedian in Residence?

The Wikimedian in Residence programme is a free resource for University of Edinburgh staff and students who want to use, teach, or contribute to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. In partnership with Wikimedia UK, we deliver workshops, support teaching and assessment, organise public editing events, and provide advice on integrating open knowledge into research, learning, and public engagement.

Since 2016, we have collaborated with courses and societies across the University, helping students develop research, digital literacy, and science communication skills while making a lasting public impact. Through curriculum projects and community edit-a-thons, participants have improved hundreds of Wikipedia articles on topics ranging from global health and translation to history, engineering, and underrepresented communities, making reliable knowledge freely accessible to millions of readers worldwide.
