Running an edit-a-thon

How to create and run an edit-a-thon.

Using Programs and Events Dashboard

The programs and events dashboard

The Programs & Events Dashboard is the recommended tool for managing Wikipedia editing events. It allows you to:

  • Track participant contributions and article edits
  • Measure the impact of your event
  • Monitor progress throughout the programme
  • Support events across multiple Wikimedia projects and languages

The dashboard can be used for different types of activities, including edit-a-thons, basic programs, and article-scoped programs.

How to set up an event:

  1. Sign in to the Programs & Events Dashboard with your Wikipedia account.
  2. Authorise the dashboard to connect to your account.
  3. Create a new programme and choose the format that best suits your event.
  4. Add your event details, including the title, description, dates, and the Wikimedia projects you want to track.
  5. Share the dashboard link with participants so their contributions can be recorded automatically.

If you are organising an edit-a-thon for the first time, we recommend contacting the Wikimedian in Residence for guidance and support.
