How to write about money in British pounds and other currencies.

British pounds (£) and pence

Use the pound symbol (£) before the number. Separate pounds and pence with a decimal point.

For amounts under £1, use ‘p’ as an abbreviation for pence.

Examples

It costs £5.50 to replace your card.  

If you return your library book late, you will be charged 75p per day per book.

Other currencies

For currencies other than British pounds, use the full name of the currency in lower case. Where needed, specify the country.

Examples

Scientists will be granted fellowships worth 15,000 euros.

The cost of accommodation for the field trip was 300 Norwegian krone.

Dollars

For dollars other than US dollars, specify the country.

Examples

The dollar fell further against the Japanese yen.

The flight cost 100 Australian dollars.

There may be cases where it is necessary to clarify that you are referring to US dollars.

Example

Agents accept payments in Australian dollars or US dollars.

Currency symbols

Use currency symbols when space is limited. Place the symbol before the amount, without a space.
