Numbers

How to write numbers and number ranges.

How to write numbers

When writing a number in a sentence, use:

  • words for one to nine
  • numerals for 10 and above

Examples

There were five students on the research team.

We will delete the records after 11 years.

When to use numerals

There are cases where it will be clearer to use numerals rather than words.

Use numerals for the following, even if the number is lower than 10:

  • money
  • measurements
  • times
  • a list of steps or stages
  • weeks, semesters or years (for example, ‘Week 1’)
  • page numbers

Fractions

Write fractions in words.

If writing a number with a fraction, write the number in words as well.

Write:

a half

three quarters

eleven and a quarter

Do not write:

½

¾

11 and a quarter

Ordinal numbers

Use words for ‘first’ to ‘ninth’, then use 10th, 11th and so on.

Do not use superscript (small characters that are above the line of type) for ‘st’, ‘nd’, ‘rd’ and ‘th’.

For centuries, see Dates and days.

Examples

The first lecture will take place at Edinburgh Futures Institute.

This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the lecture series.

Do not mix numerals and words in a sentence

When writing more than one number (where one is higher and one lower than ten), do not mix numerals and words. Use one format consistently.

Write:

The class can have between seven and thirteen students.

The class can have between 7 and 13 students.

Do not write:

The class can have between seven and 13 students.

Use a comma to separate thousands

Use a comma and no spaces to separate thousands.

Example

The University has 3,500 computers.

Millions and billions

Use a numeral followed by the word ‘million’ or ‘billion’.

Use a decimal if required.

Write:

The healthcare budget was less than £10 million.

The population of Scotland is 5.5 million.

Do not write:

The healthcare budget was less than £10,000,000.

The population of Scotland is 5,500,000.

Avoid abbreviating the words ‘million’ or ‘billion’. If necessary, abbreviate to ‘mn’ or ‘bn’.

Percentages

Guidance on writing percentages is in the punctuation section of this guide.

Roman numerals

Avoid using Roman numerals unless they are part of a title or proper noun.

Ranges

Express number ranges using words such as ‘to’ or ‘and’.

Avoid using hyphens to express a range.

Write:

Students aged 18 to 21 can apply.

You will have between 12 and 15 hours of teaching per week.

Do not write:

Students aged from 18-21 can apply.

You will have 12 – 15 hours of teaching per week.

Avoid starting sentences with numbers

Where possible, phrase the sentence so the number is within the sentence.

Write:

We built the library building 30 years ago.

Do not write:

30 years ago we built the library building.

If you need to use a number to start a sentence, write it in words.

Write:

Thirty years ago we built the library building.
