Top Digital Accessibility Reminders

Here is a quick reference guide to the top tips for digital accessibility

Do:

  • Use sans serif font (e.g., Arial);
  • Use left align for formatting text;
  • Use font size 12 or above as a minimum;
  • Ensure text alternative descriptions to non-text content (e.g., alt text);
  • Add human-corrected captions to all video content;
  • Ensure good colour contrast between font and background colours;
  • Use style formats and code headings H1-H4 on digital content;
  • Add contact details for users requiring an alternative format.

Don’t:

  • Use italics, continuous capitals or underlining;
  • Use text as an image;
  • Add plain web addresses or ‘click here’, and instead adopt clear, descriptive links for the destination (e.g., ‘Visit the University of Edinburgh website’);
  • Use colour alone to convey information;
  • Utilise Portable Document Format (PDF) and instead use Word or Hypertext Markup Language (HTML);
  • Include flashing, scrolling or moving text.
