Content Improvement Club

A regular meetup for anyone who publishes web content at the University to share good practice and learn about content design.

About this meetup

This is a monthly session run by the User Experience Service.

It's for anyone who publishes web content at the University. That includes publishing to:

  • University websites, whether they run on EdWeb or another platform
  • Internal websites such as SharePoint
  • Virtual Learning Environments such as Learn

We alternate between online and in-person sessions.

The aim of these meetups is to share good practice and learn about content design. When you sign up, we'll invite you to submit a page from your site that you'd like to work on with others in the session. You can still attend if you don't want to submit a page.

You can read about previous sessions on our blog:

How accessible are your images? Improving alt text in digital content

Date: Tuesday 20 January; repeat session on Tuesday 27 January

Time: 2pm to 3pm

Place: Online only (Microsoft Teams)

Alt text (short for alternative text) is a written substitute for non-textual content, like images. When you add an image to a website, app or other digital product, it’s important to include alt text that puts the image into words so that people who don't see the image can still understand its meaning.

In this online session, we will cover:

  • why making your images accessible is important
  • how to write good alt text
  • what to do when there’s text in images or you need to use an infographic

You will have a chance to work with other publishers on alt text within your own digital content. You’ll learn how to view the alt text for images on your site and how you can improve the accessibility of your images.

This is an interactive session so we’re limiting this to a maximum of 20 people. We would encourage you to join from somewhere you can have your mic on.

These sessions are delivered by the User Experience Service. They’re for anyone who publishes web content at the University, whether that’s on a departmental website or on an intranet site.

Five quick wins to improve your content in 2026

Date: Wednesday 25 February 2026

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Place: Edinburgh Futures Institute (in person only)

The new year is often a time to set good intentions for the year ahead. In this session, we will help you start the year on the right foot by covering five quick wins to improve your content. We will also provide a handy checklist for you to take away with you and share with colleagues after the session.

The session will focus on five quick wins. Using the checklist, we’ll look at:

  • making content easy to scan
  • checking how your content displays on different devices
  • improving links and buttons
  • using images effectively
  • keeping pages up to date

You will have a chance to work with other publishers, using the checklist to review pages you work on and gain feedback on your page.

This is an interactive session so we’re limiting this to a maximum of 20 people.
